Acts Of Service: The Love Language

A love language is the way in which a person gives and how they prefer to receive love. Love languages are starting to become the subject of conversation more and more thanks to a book that has been popularized. The 5 Love Languages was written by Dr. Gary Chapman, an American author and radio talk show host. Within the text of this modern published work, five love languages are described and identified. They are as follows:

  • Acts of Service
  • Words of Affirmation
  • Receiving Gifts
  • Quality Time
  • Physical Touch

So, why should you give the concept of love languages any consideration? Understanding love languages facilitates the meeting of emotional needs for both you and your partner. When you know your own love language you are much more equipped for communicating to your honey the kind of things that you value, and vice versa. Detroit based psychotherapist Stefani Goerlich stated, “I have found that 8 times out of 10, whatever the issues are that my client-couples bring to the table, they are rooted in a fundamental misalignment in how each partner gives and receives love.” Because of this observation, Goerlich has found that consideration for the five love languages can in fact be a useful tool.

The Pew Research Center conducted a study in 2016 which highlighted the way that a majority of couples saw acts of service. It was reported that, “More than half of all married couples believed that sharing housework was a major importance in a successful marriage.” With this being said, acts of service can be categorized as a love language of considerable value. If more than half of all the married couples who participated in the study could agree on their existing value in acts of service, then one would not be wrong to ask themselves how to become fluent in this love language.
